Very interesting approach.
I think that this topic was first explored by Aaron Hertzmann back in 2001.
It uses 2 "template" images to get the desired result by means of image analogy:
http://www.mrl.nyu.edu/projects/image-analogies/
This new approach uses only one "template" image.
